This species is very easy to keep and propagate. As a result, it is no longer possible to make clear determinations without further ado. Due to the ease of crossing, new varieties are constantly entering the market. This is easy to see from the large range of ornamental chilies on offer in garden centers. Even in the countries of origin, several names are sometimes known for one variety.

This species has produced so many varieties (from small ornamental chillies to bush and tree-like plants in Mexico) that it is not immediately possible to distinguish them from other species. There is a very wide range not only in size, but also in the color of the leaves and flowers. The leaves vary from light green to dark green. Even variegated varieties are known. The flowers (normally white) also come in purple colors.
