General information about Capsicum

The Solanaceae family consists of the subfamilies Cestreae (tobacco), Nicandra (poison berry), Solaneae with the genera Capsicum and Solanum, as well as Datura.

For a long time, the datura (Datura) and the angel's trumpet (Brugmansia) were listed together under the name Datura.

Since 1973, a distinction has been made between the herbaceous Datura and the tree-like Brugmansia on the basis of evidence provided by T.E. Lockwood.

While the Solanum consists of a wide variety of bush or climbing plants (similar to the white-flowered "jasmine"), a distinction is now made between 25 species of Capsicum. Due to disputes between botanists (similar to the different opinions on Datura and Brugmansia), 33 to 50 species have been differentiated at times.
